Sparking The Fire

Hot in Chicago #3

by

Kate Meader

Kate Meader is fast becoming a favorite of mine. This is the second book I've read by this author and I'm completely captivated by her easy humorous writing style. I wish I had more time, I'd lock myself up and go on a Kate Meader reading spree.

Five years ago a man and a woman had one week of anonymous sexual bliss that left both of them with a whole lot of regret that it didn't go any further...but they both had places to be, things to do and the stars just didn't align so they both thought of the other as the one that got away.

She wore that dress, was the barometer by which he had measured every woman in the last five years, and she had the 411 on cars? Someone up there hated his guts.

Molly Cade's star rose fast in Hollywood when she met her now ex-husband. And it fell just as fast after nude pics of her leaked and caused a scandal. With this new movie about a woman in a male dominated profession she wants to rise back up into the elite of Tinseltown. The one thing that would make her movie perfect is having Alexandra Dempsey's point of view since she is the person it is actually about. Having done her research she knows she has to go through the Dempseys from Chicago who have a reputation of being fiercely protective of their family.

Former Marine, now firefighter Wyatt Fox, the silent and broody Dempsey, has received an assignment by his cap which he doesn't look forward to. His expertise is needed for a Hollywood movie about a female firefighter in Chicago. He'd rather be doing his job but his last gig left him with a sore shoulder. That this movie is supposed to be based on his sister's story doesn't really entice him either. At least that's what he is telling himself.

That was the problem with magnets. Attraction wasn't a choice.

When Molly is introduced to the hunky, beautiful guy who is supposed to be her tech consultant on set she immediately recognizes the hot Marine she met five years ago and had a week of sexual bliss with.

"Hey, do you guys...know each other?"
"Depends on your definition of know."
"We had some mutual interests once," Wyatt said, a pagan gleam in those blue gray eyes. "Bars. Shakespeare." Sexy pause. "Elevators."

Molly stands for everything Wyatt tries to avoid. He is a loner and the Dempsey who stays in the shadows, protecting what's his, and fiercely so, from the sidelines. He is deeply private, a straight shooter and bossy. He has always felt he didn't belong, like the odd one in the boisterous Dempsey bunch.
This feeling of inadequacy comes from his family history and is the reason for him to give the stage to his siblings.  Even though he doesn't show it he cares deeply and it was a pleasure to see how Molly enabled him to bring his feelings to the forefront. The flirty side of him and his dry wit are delicious because they often come out unexpectedly.

"You planning to glare me into orgasm, Marine?"
"I don't glare. I smolder."

Molly is a sassy, smart young actress, burned by the media and her ex. She knows that her and Wyatt's lives don't mix. The reality of it and the constant reminder by the media make her regret a little that she can't be the private person he would need and deserve. Wyatt knows exactly what Molly needs as long as his caveman doesn't surface. Then all bets are off.

The banter between these two is hilarious and delicious - I have marked so many quotes on my Kindle. It's a trademark of Kate Meader that she knows how to write amazingly witty and clever dialogues. She also puts her stamp on the chemistry between her main protagonists, which is explosive and will leave your ovaries in a tangle. Molly and Wyatt's love story is a slow burn but once they ignite...holy sh...

"Babe, you deserve better than a quick fumble.
"She scoffed. "Quick? Ha! You are slower than a snail on top of a turtle. I've never met a guy who takes his time like you do"

I loved Molly and Wyatt together, they completed each other, loved how they tore each other's walls down, little by little. The diva 'tude doesn't faze this hunk of a firefighter and since it isn't over the top it didn't keep me from liking Molly. But the star of this book? Definitely Wyatt.

All the characters, main and secondary, are really well fleshed out. The side cast is pretty amazing and I'm going to read Ms. Meader's backlist as soon as I have room for it. Gage is my favorite and it doesn't hurt that he is gay!

There is no question that this author can write. I'm a huge fan.

"Falling in love with you was the easiest thing I've ever done. Falling is easy. Staying that way is hard. but I've been choosing hard all my life, so why the hell would the life I make with the woman who completes me be any different? I love you like a madman. You're the air I breathe, my next heartbeat, and I'm never letting go."

3.5 Delicious Stars

I have read one Nina Lane book, Arouse, and I loved it hard. She swept me away into Prof. Dean's and Liv's world and left such an impression that I still remember their names, which doesn't happen very often. I intend to read all the other Spiral of Bliss books and judging from the reviews they have received the series only gets better. But I digress, since this is not supposed to be a rave about this author's previous works.

Luke Stone is the well known, good looking and workaholic CEO of Sugar Rush Candy Company who likes to spend his nights in a dive bar when he wants to stay anonymous. He is driven, controlling and there is no room for long lasting relationships. Work is all he lives for. When he goes into a relationship, he has a set of rules ready. One night at the bar he locks eyes with a pretty bohemian and drunk girl. She proposes a night of fun...but this one doesn't end as expected.

When Polly's mom died she asked her daughter to live her life. Her mother left her and her sister the bakery and in her memory she wants to continue running it. Part of her plan to do this is taking confectionary and pastry classes. She has lived her life pleasing other people, always putting other people's needs before her. Breaking up with her boyfriend is the first step into her new life. Introducing more fun the second. When she wakes up after the night of her twenty third birthday and remembers how it ended her embarrassment knows no bounds. Things get even more awkward when she runs into the object of her desire on the evening of her birthday after leaving such a terrible impression.

Luke was everything I look for in a male lead. Strong, dominant, sexy, protective. The way he treats Polly in the beginning is sweet and you watch him fall for her, despite him repeatedly reminding her that he can't offer anything long lasting. I really liked how he took care of his girl but he was also stubborn and unreasonable and towards the end the jerk came out to play which was one of the things that brought my rating down. They had a discussion in the last 15% of the book which had me scratching my head in confusion.

"Our affair has a deadline"
Irritation speared through him. "Who said it has a deadline?"
"You did"
"I never said that."
"You said your relationships have parameters and deadlines."
"I meant my relationships with other women. Not with you"

How was Polly to know when he kept insisting that this wasn't long lasting. Sounds to me like a deadline. So where did that come from? Sorry, beats me. At no point, however, I doubted his devotion to this heroine.

Polly was as sweet, open and friendly as they come with a good dose of strong will. She stands up for herself and doesn't let people walk over her. She is set on making her life better and enjoying it. Polly accepts Luke the way he is without wanting to change him and that includes accepting that their relationship will end at some point.

I love a well written sex scene as much as the next girl. I love the slow build up and the tension. This book had really good ones...until Polly opened her mouth. What came out sounded to me artificial and not in character. Polly is sweet and not very experienced in the men/sex department so her getting it on like a pornstar was a little bit irritating.

You will find sweet and funny moments in this story:

"Luke" she whispered. "Are you asleep?""No", he mumbled.
"You can turn around now."
"No, I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because I have a boner the size of a redwood tree."

I really loved most of the secondary cast, especially aunt Julia, who had hysterical conversations with Polly.

Overall this story was cute, low in the angst department and with a healthy dose of steam. The characters were likable and there were some wonderful and sweet parts I really adored. While this wasn't a complete winner for me, I would like to urge you to read this book to form your own opinion. There are a lot of people who loved this story so who knows, you'll probably love it too! I loved it enough to see the potential in this series and will definitely read the next installment!

Chandler by Laurelin Paige

A Fixed Trilogy Spinoff

Release Date: September 20th, 2016

Genre: Contemporary Romance

I'm good in a boardroom, but I’m better in the bedroom. Much better. I can charm the skirt off any woman in one encounter. I'll even give her an orgasm before I put her in a cab. Or three. No more or she’ll start making plans for the future and I'm not into that.

Or I wasn’t until Genevive Fasbender. She's the first woman in five years that I want to spend the whole night with. And she's the first woman who’s told me I'm not what she wants in a lover, even after multiple O’s. She’s brash and bold and stubborn as hell, and she doesn’t believe it’s possible to satisfy her.

But I’m up for the challenge.

And after an incident in my brother’s office closet―a downright dirty incident―I think I’m just the guy to deliver.
Genevive Fasbender will never know what’s coming.

Five minutes later, the valet pulls up with my car. Genevieve raises an eyebrow. “A Bugatti?”
I’m so impressed she can name the model that I practically jizz in my pants. “It’s the best.”
She shakes her head, and I swear I hear her mutter something about rich men and their toys, but I don’t respond, too occupied with inspecting my car and then passing the attendant the cash I promised him earlier for returning my vehicle in perfect condition.
I slide into the driver’s seat, and when I look over at Genevieve as she buckles her seatbelt, a wave of pure, unadulterated lust rolls through me. I’m very aware that I’ve trapped her, that she’s now defenseless to my whims. Not that I’d take advantage, but goddamn, to think that I could…
I nearly shiver at my own vile thoughts.
Glad she can’t know what I’m thinking, I flash her a smile. “So. Where am I taking you?”
“I’m staying at the Park Hyatt on 57th Street.”
“Fancy.” The Park Hyatt is one of the nicest luxury hotels in New York. That means this girl has money, which isn’t a bad thing. Just, the swell of my wallet in my back pocket is usually one of my better attributes. If wealth doesn’t attract her, I hope I’m not shit out of luck when it comes to getting an invitation up to her room.
Apparently, I’m transparent because she asks, “Not impressed?”
“Quite the opposite. I’m worried you won’t have a reason to be impressed with me.” Now I’m the one who can’t believe how honest I’m being.
“It’s a valid worry,” she says after a beat, and I can’t tell if she’s teasing or being blunt. Can’t tell if I should prepare for gut-wrenching disappointment or dive into another round of sexy banter.
I concentrate on my driving instead, speeding up before slipping expertly into a tight opening in the adjacent lane.
I’ll admit I’m showing off.
“Smashing,” she says with a tone that vibrates through my body like I’m a tuning fork.
Then, abruptly, she laughs, and I turn my head toward her, alarmed at the source of her amusement.
“I still can’t believe you drive a Bugatti in the city. I can’t decide if that makes you brilliant or as mad as a bag of ferrets.”
“Brilliant, of course.” Though, with her so close, I feel more like I’m going crazy. “What can I say? I like things that are fast.”
“Of course you do.”
“You don’t?” I raise a questioning brow. “Maybe you don’t understand how awesome fast can be.” I put my foot on the gas and race down the next block to prove my point.
The traffic light turns red as I approach the intersection, and I ease the brakes. “See? Fast is fun.”
“The problem with fast is it’s over too quickly.”
Is that innuendo? Her gaze pierces into me, and the air around us feels tight and charged, and I’m suddenly certain that I will die if I don’t get to taste her tonight.
Even if she didn’t mean anything more when she made her statement, I certainly do when I say, “Don’t worry. I know when to take my time.”
She exhales, slowly, and I swear I can feel it. As though she’s already in my arms and her breath is grazing every inch of my bare skin. No matter what happens after this, I know she at least feels this…this attraction. Or whatever it is.
Her voice is low and sultry when she replies. “You’re not talking about cars anymore. But do you really take your time? I’d guess you bolt the minute you’re finished.” She’s so blunt, so direct, and I don’t know if it’s a her thing or an English thing, but I like it.
I also like this conversation we’re having. Because we’re drawing the lines, and that means the potential for tonight is high. So I answer with a nod, making sure she understands that she’s correct in thinking I’ll bolt. Because I will.

I’ve loved him as long as I can remember.

The gangly boy with big brown eyes and unruly hair who grew up into an intoxicating man. He wears scruff like he invented it and ambles with a swagger that makes panties drop.

Killian Shepard.

Shep.

We grew up together. We played Ghost in the Graveyard. Had our own rock band. It didn’t matter that he was five years older than me. It didn’t matter that he looked at me as a kid sister even as I grew into a woman. It didn’t even matter when he left me behind to go to college and start his adult life.

He’d be back.

He was always meant to be mine.

He came back, all right. But instead of smelling of promises, he stunk of betrayal. And he destroyed me—us—the day he married my sister instead of me.

So I did the only thing a girl like me in my position could do.

I got my revenge.

I married his brother, Kael.

Now we’re one big happy fucking family.

I’m just a regular ol’ Midwest girl who likes Game of Thrones and am obsessed with Modern Family and The Goldbergs. I run, I eat, I run, I eat. It’s a vicous cycle. I love carbs, but there’s love-hate relationship with my ass and thighs. Mostly hate. I like a good cocktail (oh hell…who am I kidding? I love any cocktail). I’m a huge creature of habit, but I’ll tell you I’m flexible. I read every single day and if I don’t get a chance…watch the hell out, I’m a raving bitch. My iPad and me: BFFs. I’m direct and I make no apologies for it. I swear too much. I love alternative music and in my next life I want to be a bad-ass female rocker. I hate, hate, hate spiders, telemarketers, liver, acne, winter and loose hairs that fall down my shirt (don’t ask, it’s a thing).

The Goal

Off Campus #4

by

Elle Kennedy

Let me start by saying that I adore this authors writing style and stories. She is one of those I can't get enough of. When I close a book I crave the next one. Please do not let the possibly lower ratings of this installment compared to the others divert you from reading Tucker's and Sabrina's story. At the end of the day it was a highly enjoyable book and I still loved it big time. I'll explain.

Sabrina is everything you hated in a girl at school. Beautiful, a magnet for men and a bitch. But we all know that underneath the smooth and hard layer there often is an insecure or troubled spirit. That hardness she displays comes from growing up with little money, living with a stepdad who gives you the creeps and without a mother, who ran away leaving her daughter in the care of her own mother. Relationships are a hinderance on her way to better herself, she is on her way to Harvard and nothing will stand in the way to reach her goal. Hookups are fine though so when she meets John Tucker that's all she sees in him.

Tucker's plans after graduation involve going back to Texas and using his degree and inheritance money to open his own business. When he lays eyes on Sabrina he feels an instant connection. A one night stand turns into an explosive sexual relationship.

She reminds me a little of those untamed ponies, all wide eyes, long legs, and the unspoken promise of the best ride of your life.

Tuck wishes for more but he understands that Sabrina's need to get out of her current situation and living a better life than the one she grew up in has priority. That one night though has consequences neither of them expected. When life gives you lemons...ask for Tequila, because you'll need it.

The first half of the book Sabrina didn't give me much to love her. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate her, her motives are sound and relateable but the walls she had errected seemed impenetrable and I was wondering why Tucker chose her. He kept saying how sweet she was and how big of a heart she had but I didn't see it. I just didn't get the feeling that there was more to her than a hardened girl who does have her qualities but they don't include sweetness or a big heart. She is fine for a hookup but for the relationship, Tuck craves? Nah. She is however ambitious, focused and resilient. (Note: we are still talking about the first half).

Tucker is the kind of book boyfriend who sets the bar to a new level and you'll compare anyone to him. He is a nurturer, sweet, a Southern gentleman with a matching drawl. And the dirty things that come out of his mouth will have you change your panties more frequently.

"I hate to tell you this, Sabrina. But you’ve made a big mistake.
“What? Why?”
“Because I’m going to ruin you for all future guys. I apologize in advance"

What you see is what you get with him, he is as genuine as they come. Rare as they are he is a guy who doesn't mind committment, he wants a relationship, family, picket fence and all the hoopla.  He wants to take care of Sabrina and does everything to lift her burden. He showers her with attention and I didn't quite understand why he was so set on making her happy when she didn't give him much back. I kept thinking that she didn't deserve him.

The second half I started to see the cracks in Sabrina's armour and she softened considerably. She became more affectionate, more emotional. She turned into somebody who I admired and even started to love. Unfortunately, it was a little bit too late then.

We get to spend time with the whole gang and I hope that we'll see a "where are they now" type of novella at some point. The story is peppered with Elle Kennedy's signature banter and had me snorting and giggling a lot.

I loved  Tucker's mischievious side:

(about his new room-mate)

"I signed up for a fake Instagram account so I can troll him. When he posts something, I'll wait a day or so and then pop on to comment about how cool it is that he and my grandpa are rocking the same shirt. Ive done that twice now and each time, I've seen him shoving the shirt down the apartment's trash compactor."

(about Sabrina's stepdad)

The bastard is rude, crude and lewd. His not a good dude. Yep, Dr. Seuss could write a series of adult rhyming books about that creep.

As I said in introduction, this was another enjoyable installment in the Off Campus series and despite all my misgivings I loved every second reading it. So now the waiting game starts again, I can't wait to see what this author has for Fitzy in store!

4.5 Red Flag Stars

Leah has been accepted as a tutor for Paxton Wilder in the study abroad program. The location? A cruising ship that will take the students to fascinating destinations like Madagascar, Morrocco and, the one Leah is looking forward to most, Mykonos in Greece. The catch? She has to tutor an X Games gold medalist, Wilder. And nomen est omen, right? He does the wildest and most dangerous stunts on bikes, parachutes, jumps from cliffs. You name it, he does it.

"Are you ready for an adventure???"

Leah doesn't do heights. A traumatic experience has cured her from everything that sounds remotely like danger. Unfortunately Wilder promises exactly that. On top of it, her success at school is tied to his and he doesn't seem to take it seriously. Too bad he is deliciously hot and almost makes her forget about studying. But with Wilder come a lot of groupies and he is not known to say no to them.

The setting of this story is as unusual as it is intriguing. I have never heard of a sports romance taking place on a cruising ship. Rebecca Yarros takes us to places we dream about seeing and describes them with wonderful colors. The attraction between the two main characters is instant but it takes a while for them to find common ground.

Then there is the not so minor secret Wilder is holding back from the girl he is falling in love with. The author hints at it pretty much from the beginning and towards the middle of the story I got a pretty clear picture what it exactly was that Paxton wanted to keep hidden away. It's like everytime Rebecca Yarros dropped a hint that a layer of the secret was peeled away. And of course it is supposed to blow up in his face.

"Tell her. Kiss her. Pray to God you can make it through the storm you're headed for, then marry her and make pretty little Wilder babies."

Yet, the angst is pretty low, which I enjoyed immensely. Woven in between is a mystery that is not as obvious and I loved how the solution totally took me by surprise.

The main and secondary cast are extremely likeable characters. The camarderie between the members of the Renegades is fabulous and you just want to be part of their group.
Leah is very responsible, she isn't a spoil sport though, she has her own streak of wildness in her and she is far away from being a push over. I was happy to see that she had a backbone. With somebody like Paxton Wilder you really have to be strong.

"Everything about you scares the shit out of me."
"When are you going to understand that's where life begins? Right at the edge of that fear."

Pax is super sweet. I know! I thought he'd be a jerk with all the money, success and women he had in his life. But that was another surprise, he is a friendly, even thoughtful guy with the best intentions at heart. And he is utterly delicious and swoonworthy. One thing I was wondering about and whether it would inflluence my rating was how Pax kept pushing Leah to do things she wasn't ready for, repeatedly, even after he knew why she was scared of heights. But I got it, I understood that he would do everything to keep her safe.

One quibble I wanted to mention: The beach on Zakynthos where the shipwreck is located and Pax and his Renegaded base-jump doesn't have a sandy beach. It's all rocks, small and white, and those hurt like a bitch. I know because I was there ;)

In a nutshell this was an enjoyable fast read and I loved every second of it. It was thrilling, exciting, breathtaking at times and incredibly sexy. The writing was flawless and I loved the almost poetic description this author used to adorn the prose.

His weight was exquisite, holding my body to the earth while he gave my soul the freedom to fly.

I can't wait to get my hands on Landon's book. I am wondering how many stories we will get. Either way, I'll be making sure to read all of them!
